Citizenship Requirements
You must be a citizen of one of the countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program. Permanent residents of these countries who are not citizens generally do not qualify for the ESTA and must apply for a traditional visa instead.
Passport Requirements
Your passport must be a machine-readable, electronic passport (e-passport) with an embedded chip containing biometric data. Older passports without this technology may not be eligible for visa-free travel under the program.
Purpose of Travel
The ESTA only covers tourism, business meetings, and transit purposes. If you intend to work, study, or reside in the United States, you will need a different type of visa.
Length of Stay
Your intended stay must not exceed 90 days. If you plan to stay longer, you must apply for an appropriate visa category before travel.
Health and Security Criteria
Applicants must not have certain communicable diseases, criminal records, or previous visa/immigration violations that would render them ineligible for the Visa Waiver Program. Additional screening applies to individuals who have traveled to certain countries.
